Offered jointly by Amtrak and VIA Rail Canada, the North America Rail Pass provides you with 30 consecutive travel days with unlimited rides and stopovers throughout the United States and Canada. VIA Rail Canada is Canada's premier passenger rail provider.

The pass entitles you to Coach Class travel, but you may upgrade to Business Class or Sleeping Car accommodations for an additional charge.

Available Trains

The pass is valid for travel on all Amtrak trains except Acela Express and the Auto Train.

Eligible Travelers

The pass is available to everyone.

The pass is not transferable. Pass holders may be required to provide identification or sign their ticket.


Your trip must include at least one journey between the United States and Canada.

Your trip must include travel on Amtrak and Via Rail Canada.

The last trip taken with the pass must end before midnight on the last day the pass is valid.

Pass holders must obtain a ticket for each trip.

The pass may be used for a maximum of four one-way trips on any given leg.

Other restrictions may apply.

Discounts for Seniors, Children and Students

Seniors (age 60 and above), children (age 2-18), and students (showing the Student Advantage Card in the United States, or the ISIC card in Canada and internationally) save an additional 10% on the North America Rail Pass. How can I purchase a North America Rail Pass?

United States Residents: Call 1-800-USA-RAIL (1-800-872-7245) or your travel agent for reservations.

Canadian Residents: Contact your travel agent or call VIA Rail Canada at 1-888-842-7245.

International Travelers: Contact an International Sales Representative.

How can I obtain tickets, once I have a pass?

Reservations are required on all segments of travel. Once reservations are made, tickets and passes can be obtained as follows:

By Mail: United States residents must obtain their tickets through Amtrak's Ticket-by-Mail service. Please note that a minimum of five days is generally required to send your tickets by mail.

At a Station: Tickets and passes can also be purchased at a staffed Amtrak station.

By Travel Agent: Contact your travel agent.

Unfortunately, we are not able to make reservations for North America Rail Pass holders online.


The pass is refundable only if it has not been used and all tickets issued using the pass are returned.

A cancellation fee of $30 is charged for each pass refunded.

Once used, a North America Rail Pass cannot be refunded.
