dice ____ en el bar a la lectura de poesía anoche
pero yo no más sonrío, pedir que se calle
y dejeme escuchar con
		la mano mio en el brazo de él
		rogando silencio

says ____ in the bar at the poetry reading last night
but I only smile, ask him to be quiet
and let me listen
my hand on his arm			
begging silence		 

menea la cabeza y
me ofrece una cerveza

he shakes his head and
offers me a beer

más tarde dice que no se le 
h'olvidado que le debo veinte

later tells me ain't forgotten
I owe him twenty

digo ni tampoco h'olvidado yo

no I say I ain't forgot either

pero ahorita cuando
por fin lo
veo		no, no puedo
decirle como pelado
ando		por mi parte
		la renta ni pagado
			ya tarde ocho días
no no puedo decirle ese va creer que pido más
el bohemio no en Paris quel dommmmmmage d'Amerique

finally see
him	no, I can't
even tell him how flat
broke I go	rent unpaid
		now a week late

de mi turno no más tenia cinco minutos respondo
		pero en miercoles por la mañana yo presenté...

		y también debías haber estado tú

why didn't you read the whole damn poem? he whines after
my turn passed only had five minutes I answer
but just Wednesday morning I read...

NO, he interrupts me to growl, I was working

		también soy uno que someta

		lentamente crece   l e n t o

		hacia delfín

growing  slowly   s l o w l y
from ameba reaction
into dolphin

aún soy yo por una hora y entonces se va

still am me for an hour and then gone

	mi paisán que gruñe otra vez

I whisper to my friend, this grizzly bear, 		
my countryman who growls again			
"you're playing in the minor leagues, brother, 
you know it and I know you know it"

no estoy de acuerdo de ninguna manera
pues aquí estoy exactamente
donde 
quiero estar

y me agrada que está conmigo él

aunque sé que nunca puedo
cambiar su opinión muy particular

I do not agree at all
for I am here exactly
where
I want to be

and I am glad he is with me

though I know I never can
change his very particular opinion

though in one thing he's right						
aunque en un asunto tiene razón				

nunca llegarás a ser un poeta de México, me dice
ni nunca serás un mexicano
	y me fije con una mirada muy firme

you will never become a Mexican poet, he tells me
nor ever never be a Mexican
and fixes me with a hard look		

pues claro que no, digo yo. ¿que crees? 
¿que eso no conozco yo? no. no más soy
otro poeta americano ya en México.

well of course not, I say. what do you think?
that I don't know that? no. I am nothing but
another American poet now in Mexico.
